The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is the largest, voluntary, charitable organisation in Ireland. Its membership of over 10,000 volunteers throughout the country offer friendship and support to individuals and families living with poverty to achieve self-sufficiency while working for social justice.
Here in Knocklyon, the St. Colmcille’s Conference membership of 14 people meet on Monday evenings at 7pm in the Iona Centre. Each member is a volunteer that dedicates 3 to 4 hours per week offering a helping hand to anyone going through a difficult time.
After the meeting, members then visit households in pairs to offer some practical or financial assistance towards day-to-day essentials. They may also offer relevant information about other services or supports. The main purpose of visiting is to spend some time talking and extending the hand of friendship.
The work of the conference is made possible through generous donations received locally throughout the year, and monthly collections in St. Colmcille’s Church.
